As Executive Vice President, Sports Operations, Kristin Bernert is responsible for leading the business operations for Madison Square Garden Sports Corp. (MSG Sports)’s portfolio of assets, which includes: the New York Knicks (NBA) and the New York Rangers (NHL); two development league teams – the Westchester Knicks (NBAGL) and the Hartford Wolf Pack (AHL); and esports teams through Counter Logic Gaming, a North American esports organization, and Knicks Gaming, an NBA 2K League franchise.
This includes spearheading the overall strategy for the brands, oversight of all financial matters, and the development and execution of a wide array of consumer-directed programs that deepen the teams’ connections with their fanbases. Ms. Bernert oversees marketing and social media strategy, fan development and community relations programs, and is responsible for ensuring each brand executes a world-class in-game and in-arena experience. In addition, she oversees ticketing for MSG Sports and MSG Entertainment, inclusive of season tickets, partial plans, group sales and single event tickets. She also helps oversee the creation of sponsorship and premium hospitality plans that drive revenue and interest in MSG Sports.
Prior to MSG Sports becoming a standalone company in April 2020, Ms. Bernert served as Executive Vice President, Sports Operations at The Madison Square Garden Company (MSG). Before being named Executive Vice President, she was Senior Vice President, Business Operations, where her role included strategic planning, budgeting and day-to-day team business operations. She was a guiding force behind the creation of “fan-first” marketing, sales, partnerships and community relations opportunities that maximized fan engagement while also improving business performance.
Ms. Bernert joined MSG in 2011 to drive the New York Liberty’s business operations, where she also contributed to player personnel and team development. She has been recognized as a “Game Changer” by the Sports Business Journal for having a major impact on the sports industry and a “Notable Women in Sports” by Crain’s New York Business. She has also been named to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Hall of Fame Honor Roll, and was enshrined in “The MAAC Experience” exhibit at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
Before joining MSG, Ms. Bernert held a number of significant positions in the world of basketball, including serving as President of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks (2008-2010); Vice President of Team Marketing and Business Operations at the NBA (2005-2008); and Vice President of the WNBA’s Detroit Shock (2002-2005). Prior to her career in basketball, she was a Corporate Sales Representative for the Cleveland Indians. She began her career in college sports, where she served as Assistant Marketing Director at Ohio State University and Assistant Athletics Director at Bowling Green State University.
Ms. Bernert graduated from Siena College with a BA in Psychology and received an MA in Sports Management from The Ohio State University.
