Who are we hiring?
The Senior Director Accounting is responsible for the overall oversight and management of the revenue accounting function. In this capacity, the individual is required to function as the controller of the revenue process, including reviewing revenue recognition policies and procedures, developing processes to ensure revenue is recognized appropriately, coordinating with relevant individuals to ensure the completeness and accuracy of revenue recognized, and ensuring timely receipt of cash to support the Company’s liquidity position. The individual is responsible for working with relevant stakeholders including third party service providers, operations, and information technology to support the revenue recognition process.
In addition, this Senior Director has responsibility for the planning, coordination and preparation of the Company’s Management’s Discussion and Analysis (“MD&A”) for inclusion in the Company’s SEC filings. The MD&A work is strategic and tactical in nature as it is the foundation for how we describe our results from an Investor Relations perspective.
In addition, the Senior Director Accounting is responsible for numerous special projects, including assessing the need for new technologies to support the accounting needs of the Company. Advises management of opportunities for efficiencies in business units as well as in the accounting function itself to utilize new technologies and develop processes to more efficiently and effectively support the accounting function. Coordinates with Financial Systems Department on the development, implementation and follow-up of the financial data that is automated in the Company’s consolidation.
Ensures the integrity of consolidated balance sheets, income statements, applicable financial statement analysis and other supporting documentation pertaining to management, annual audit, SEC and other reports. Is responsible for providing information to internal and external auditors and tax departments. Evaluates and identifies areas of potential exposure and internal control weaknesses, including collaborating with Internal Audit to most efficiently implement key controls.
What will you do?
- Lead and manage the overall revenue recognition process for MSG Sports Co. which includes oversight over all relevant revenue streams of the Company. This includes coordinating with relevant stakeholders including third party service providers, operations, finance, and information technology to ensure the Company’s revenue is appropriately being recognized and disclosed in the financial statements. In addition, the individual is responsible for staying abreast of the Company’s operations to identify and review new revenue transactions to ensure appropriate accounting and ensure key stakeholders are aware of accounting treatment;
- Through leading the revenue recognition team, review and design revenue processes and procedures to more efficiently ensure revenue is appropriately recognized and ultimately collected. The individual will support the Company’s financial and liquidity position through accurate management of accounts receivable and cash collections related to significant revenue streams;
- Have a role in the external reporting activities for MSG Sports Co., which includes the development of well written MD&A, with crisp, precise explanations on the variances, and footnotes disclosed within these documents. Responsible for the preparation and/or review of supporting schedules to ensure the accuracy and supportability of the MD&A and press release disclosures. Ensuring that Controller is kept abreast of any potential issues;
- Lead project management and coordination with the Company’s external auditors, including review of auditor PBC lists and management thereof, coordination of transaction testing and coordination of financial statement comments;
- Lead in the design and implementation of key financial systems where applicable, including the design and documentation of key controls and processes around systems, coordination and leading of testing efforts, and coordination with Information Technology to ensure systems are appropriately implemented in the Accounting organization. In addition, lead the development or modification of significant accounting policies based upon system and process changes;
- Manage the monthly, quarterly and annual company-wide book close process; Ensure compliance with the Company’s programs with respect to internal control over financial reporting in connection with SOX, including advising management of opportunities for efficiencies within the accounting processes, along with regular interaction with MSG Internal Audit;
- Complete special projects as assigned;
- Provide information to external and internal auditors as necessary; and
- Manage, train and evaluate staff.
What do you need to succeed?
- Minimum 10-15 years of experience, preferably a mix of Big 4 public accounting and accounting in private industry.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting.
- Experience in revenue accounting, including review of technical accounting for significant revenue contracts
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate and interpret data and draw relevant conclusions.
- Possesses strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Active CPA license (required)
