NEW YORK, May 19, 2021 – New York Rangers President and General Manager Chris Drury announced today that the team has named Mike Grier Hockey Operations Advisor.
In his role, Grier will work with the hockey operations department in both hockey-related decisions and off-ice player and prospect development. In addition, he will assist prospects in the Rangers organization, including players with the Rangers’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack, with on-ice development.
Grier played parts of 14 seasons in the NHL (1996-97 – 2010-11) with the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, and San Jose Sharks, registering 162 goals and 221 assists for 383 points, along with 510 penalty minutes in 1,060 games. He helped his team advance to the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 11 of his 14 NHL seasons, and he skated in 101 career Stanley Cup Playoff games. Grier also served as an alternate captain on his team for several seasons throughout his career. The Detroit, Michigan native represented the United States at the 2004 IIHF World Championship, helping Team USA earn a bronze medal, and he also played in the 1995 IIHF World Junior Championship. Prior to beginning his professional career, Grier played three seasons of collegiate hockey at Boston University. In 1994-95, he helped Boston University win the National Championship, was named to the NCAA (East) First All-American Team, won the Walter Brown Award as the best American-born collegiate hockey player in New England, and was a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the best player in collegiate hockey.
Following his playing career, Grier has held several positions with an NHL team. Most recently, he served as an Assistant Coach with the New Jersey Devils for two seasons (2018-19 and 2019-20). Grier also served four seasons as Professional Scout with the Chicago Blackhawks (2014-15 – 2017-18).
